Harpers Ferry KOA, WVA

The primary reason for our stop in Harpers Ferry was to attend Julie and Jack’s wedding, part of Tom’s family.

We did have a chance to explore the area, Harper’s Ferry is National Historical Park, primarily known as half way point for AT (though Pine Grove Furnace is the actual half way) and for it’s civil war history.

We decided to hike a portion of the AT, boy, my legs forgot how to deal with elevation! The trail crosses the Shenandoah River bridge, then climbs quickly to the ridge.  We hiked to the overlook of Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, once to gained the ridge, it was not too bad.  We could not go all the way, part of the trail was closed due to repairs of road Rt 340.  Next day we saw crews climbing on the rock face to start fixing it. I did feel the hike next day…

Exploring the town was easy, the park has a shuttle from the main parking lot to downtown.  You can walk the AT across the pedestrian bridge, right next to fully functional railroad. We’ve learned that West Virginia has no flat areas, basically the state is just hills, mountains and ridges with some rivers.  Walking around town, exploring the historical buildings, was a great workout and our reward was a nice meal at the Rabbit Hole.  Great food, I had the Artichoke “Crabcake” sandwich, and view of the train station and hills beyond it.

The weather was not great, another storm was moving up the coast and Saturday, the day of the wedding, was a total downpour.  Still, we enjoyed the party, the tent kept everyone dry, food was very good and we are super happy for Julie and Jack to start their new journey together.  Congratulations!

As we were packing up two days later, the old problem in the camper showed up and changed the tone of next couple of weeks.
