Lake Powhatan, NC

Since we had to make reservations for one extra day at Lake Powhatan, the sites we got had no utilities.  The weather was sunny and warm, but we knew the night will be cold.  Our rig had plenty of battery/solar power so we could run the heater without any issues, but we were concerned about Anthony, since he had just the standard battery which may not be capable of getting the job done.

Still, setting up was easy, the campground is woodsy with trees separating the sties.  The loop we had was on a hill.  After a nice dinner at Tupelo Honey Cafe and a quick campfire, we turned in.

After we transferred out sites and setup in the new location, we took a ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  If you ever have a chance to take that road, do it.  There are lots of pull offs with fantastic views and lots and lots of trails.

We hiked Grassy Knob and Cold Knob, both were short hikes, but with very steep ascent.  Not much of a view on top, but pretty trails with wild flowers and rhododendrons. Good to get the legs moving. We also walked from our campsite along Lake Powhatan, small lake fed by a stream and tucked into the hills. Lots of rhododendrons and a small sandy beach, too cold for a swim.

We saw many cars with hikers and bikers (mountain biking) along the local roads leading to the campground.  It was similar along the parkway, with people hiking, biking or just walking their dogs.  This gives Asheville and the area a feeling of outdoor living.  The town itself is nice, a bit hilly, with good restaurants, breweries, and other venues.

There’s a lot to explore in the area, the outdoors of course, but the town itself as well.  Staying there for 3 days is not enough.   I would love to come back.
