Jennings Ferry, AL
Jennings Ferry campground is along the shore of Black Warrior River, named for Tuscaloosa Chief. It was built by ACE, the sites are large and private, facing the water. If you like fishing, this is the place to go.
There’s not much to do in the area, so it is a perfect time to relax and catchup on housework, blogging and reading. There’s no trails to hike, just a nice walk around the campground. We met the hosts, it is always interesting to hear what brings people in for this work. Gordie moved around a lot, from Colorado to California, Georgia and now deep south in Alabama. We met another gentlemen, he was there with his wife. He had health issues before, so did his wife and now all he wants to do is get a rig and travel.
Driving around the area, the contrast between how we live in NJ and here is profound. I’m so used to houses and stores right around the corner (more or less), but this part of Alabama is sparsely populated, far from major towns. It’s beautiful, the river meanders through the low hills. We could see that flooding occurs, most houses right by the river are lifted 5-10 feet. Talking to some of the campers that are familiar with the area, it gets very hot and humid during the summer. I’m glad we are here in the spring.
After our hike at Merrill Creek, NJ and our efforts to identify, hopefully, some snow geese, I got the Merlin App. It identifies birds by their calls, pretty cool.
So here, we have some barred owls, woodpeckers and egrets, which I saw in the morning. On the last stop, we had a cute tufted titmouse that decided to move into our hitch, making a nest in just few days. Sadly, we need to dismantle the nest, I wonder though if the birds moved into our neighbors hitch after we left (they had a Brinkley as well).
After enjoying nature and warm weather, we are off to Mississippi.
