7th Ranch RV, Garyowen MT (Little Bighorn)

From Cody, WY we went north across the Bighorn Basin with Absarokas Range to the west , just beautiful. Straight road north across the prairies with rolling hills to the east. There were some cyclists on the road, we immediately thought of Larry as the guy in the lead, going up the hill.

The town of Garryowen is just off I-90 and next to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument .  The campground we stayed at is south of  the park, on a hill of what appears to be a working ranch.  It was the first time I saw people traveling with cats! One of them called Whiskey, came around to say hi and to investigate.  Is it time for Milo to travel?

We visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument and took self-guided driving tour of the battlefield. NPS provides audio guide on your phone with description of key locations and perspective from the US Army survivors and from the Native Americans.  The area covered by the battle, or rather series of smaller fights, was large, stretching more than 6-7 miles.

Almost opposite of The Last Stand Monument is the Indian Memorial, relatively new addition to the park. It’s theme is “Peace through Unity”, it lists all the tribes that partook in this battle and names of famous warriors.

I found these words especially poignant: “We did not ask you white men to come here. The Great Spirit gave us this country as a home. You had yours. We did not interfere with you. We do not want your civilization!” - Ta Sunke Witko (Crazy Horse)

There’s a lot of history in this area,  there’s stark beauty in the prairies as well.  We are off to Sundance WY, the northwest end of Black Hills and different landscape to experience.
